SUSHI & SAKE - NISHINKI MARKET
NISHINKI MARKET
Kyoto’s famous Nishinki Market takes all the elements of the city’s food, culture, people and fashion and throws it all into one straight market place spanning over 400 meters through downtown. I could’ve lived in this market. Vendors are lined up all over with booths featuring everything from sushi, sake, tempura, ramen, candy, fruit, clothes, etc. There’s smells of eel being cooked, shrimp being grilled and immediately you feel like a kid in a candy store. It was packed with people wall to wall and as different things started to catch my eye, I went down the rabbit hole of the foods and drinks in “Kyoto’s Kitchen.”
The food here was outstanding. We stopped at one vendor for fresh fried crab and shrimp tempura, sake and toro skewers. Another vendor had both kobe and waygu beef (also delicious) and one of the vendors towards the main entrance had grilled shrimp skewers that honestly made me consider missing my flight back to the states.
The best thing about Nishinki Market is that there are so many options that allow you to explore every aspect of Kyoto’s cuisine.
The food was so good we made a last ditch effort to revisit before we left because where else are you going to get shrimp tempura that looks that good! There’s enough to do in the market between eating and shopping to keep you busy for a few hours not to mention enough sake to go around to keep you happy.
